Course Description
The mastery of conflict practice requires more than basic technical skills. It requires the ability to understand conflict as it is shaped by perspective, worldview, and underlying assumptions.

This course is a condensed version of the "Theories of Conflict" course taught at Mitchell Hamline’s Dispute Resolution Institute, one of the top-ranked dispute resolution programs in the nation. The instructor, Kenneth H. Fox, is the founding director of the institute and a nationally recognized leader in conflict studies, with decades of experience teaching, researching, and practicing in the field.

Designed for experienced mediators, attorneys, and conflict professionals with prior training, this advanced masterclass is intended for practitioners who already have a foundation in conflict resolution and are ready to deepen their analytical rigor, professional judgment, and adaptive capacity in complex cases. Moving beyond a skills-based focus, the course explores how conflict is understood through multiple theoretical lenses. Participants will examine core perspectives on conflict and consider how each lens frames the nature of conflict, sources of escalation, roles of third parties, and possibilities for response. Emphasis is placed on recognizing how perspective influences interpretation, professional judgment, and leadership presence.

Through applied examples, guided analysis, and reflective discussion, participants will practice using a structured, multi-lens approach to analyze complex conflict situations. Participants will leave with a practical analytical framework they can immediately apply to their own cases and professional contexts. The course supports experienced practitioners in developing and refining their capacity to notice patterns, question assumptions, and intervene with greater clarity and intentionality.

The course will be conducted IN-PERSON in Roseville, MN, on May 12, 19, and 26, from 2:00–5:00 PM CT, for a total of 9 hours. We have applied for Continuing Education (CE) and Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit for the full 9 hours, and will provide final accreditation details upon approval.

All participants will receive a complimentary copy of Kenneth H. Fox's new book, "Perspectives on Conflict," which is designed to complement the theory and discussion in the course.

Review on: Perspectives on Conflict Masterclass

The Perspectives on Conflict Mastercourse is genuinely one of my favorite courses. It expanded the way I understand other people’s perspectives—and my own—and the frameworks have become foundational to how I show up in mediation and conflict work. I still find myself coming back to these principles regularly. If you’ve already taken a mediation skills course, this is an excellent next step. It helps you integrate the mediation skills into something deeper: presence, clarity, and discernment in the room. And if you haven’t taken a mediation skills course yet, you should—and this course will prepare your mind to use those skills well when you do. Ken Fox is a master practitioner and an exceptional teacher. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
